    Defel

Defel—often called Wraiths—are elusive, nearly invisible beings from the high-gravity world Af'El, a planet bathed only in ultraviolet light. Their fur absorbs nearly all visible wavelengths, causing them to appear as vague shadows to most other species. In ultraviolet, however, they display brilliant hues ranging from golden to deep azure. Due to the crushing gravity, violent storms, and harsh seasons of Af'El, Defel live in tightly knit underground communities, developing advanced mining and metallurgical traditions tied to the export of rare meleenium used in durasteel production. Their ultraviolet-only vision renders them effectively Blind in normal light unless wearing a specialized visor—standard equipment for any Defel leaving Af'El. Most offworlders believe Defel are mythical creatures or living shadows, a misconception reinforced by their natural stealth and near-invisibility. Those who travel beyond their homeworld often become thieves, assassins, scouts, infiltrators, or expert metallurgists employed by starship foundries. In personal matters, Defel value freedom, independence, and honor, standing by their promises but preferring subtlety, secrecy, and manipulation over open confrontation.

Home Planet: Af'El (Outer Rim, orbiting Ka'Dedus)
Physical Description: Defel are short, stocky, mammalian humanoids with canine-like snouts, sharp white teeth, and long limbs tipped with digging talons. Their fur bends and absorbs visible wavelengths of light, rendering them nearly invisible except as blurred shadows in normal illumination. In ultraviolet light their fur shows vivid colors, revealing their true appearance. Their reliance on ultraviolet vision means Defel require special visors to function offworld; without such visors, they are effectively Blind.

Personality & Customs: Defel are fiercely independent yet deeply loyal to family, close allies, and patrons. Their society relies on cooperation for survival, but individuals strongly value personal freedom and pride. They distrust oath-breakers and will sever ties with those who violate honor, yet are comfortable operating through secrecy, subtle maneuvering, and quiet observation. Defel cities are subterranean, carved through dense meleenium-rich stone, and their culture is shaped by communal survival, harsh weather, and generations of metallurgical expertise.
