Herglic

Herglics are hulking, water-evolved mammals native to the oceanic world of Giju. Descended from aquatic ancestors, they retain several distinctive traits: thick blubbery skin, immense lung capacity, and a functional blowhole atop the head. Though they have long since adapted to life on land and developed sophisticated technology, their bodies still reflect their maritime origins.

Herglics are famously honest and fair-minded. A Herglic deal is considered ironclad, and their reputation as upright traders has endured for centuries. This same trusting nature, however, makes them vulnerable to con artists—who quickly discover that deceiving a Herglic often results in long-lasting, merciless revenge.

Culturally, Herglics love excitement, novelty, and risk. Gambling is an ingrained tradition among their people, and many Herglics struggle with thrill-seeking urges. Their species played a critical role in early galactic expansion, being one of the first to independently develop space travel and establish far-flung trade routes. Though mistreated during the Imperial era, Herglics remain committed to fairness, justice, and helping devastated worlds rebuild.

Physical Description: Herglics stand between 1.7 and 2.2 meters tall but are far wider and heavier than most bipeds due to their dense musculature and blubber. Their skin is smooth, hairless, and ranges from dark blue-gray to jet black, sometimes with pale striping. Their faces feature large lidded eyes, an expansive mouth, and a blowhole at the crown. Because of their sheer mass, many standard ship corridors and doorframes must be modified to accommodate them.

Personality & Customs: Friendly, enthusiastic, and extremely social, Herglics enjoy traveling, meeting new beings, and experiencing new cultures. Gambling, risk-taking, and thrill seeking are woven into Herglic tradition. Many governments with large Herglic populations outlaw gambling entirely due to the species' widespread addiction. Despite these flaws, Herglics maintain a strong ethical core, valuing fairness, cooperation, and honest trade. Their contributions to early galactic expansion cemented their role as explorers, merchants, and scouts across the stars.
