Gungans are amphibious humanoids native to the swamps and lakes of Naboo. Though often underestimated by outsiders, they possess advanced bio-organic technology, thriving underwater cities, and a proud martial tradition. Their culture grew out of long, bloody clan wars that eventually gave way to a more unified and peaceful society, but echoes of that warrior spirit remain in their discipline, tactics, and reverence for the Gungan Grand Army.
Gungans prefer to grow and shape their technology rather than build it in rigid industrial forms. Bubble cities like Otoh Gunga, bongo submarines, and energy-plasma-based weapons exemplify their ecological approach to science and engineering. They are capable scouts, hunters, and soldiers who move with equal ease between water and land, using their powerful legs, flexible bodies, and natural waterproofing to navigate Naboo’s wetlands and beyond.
While relations with the human Naboo were once tense, the alliance forged during the Trade Federation’s invasion changed galactic perceptions of the Gungans. Many still remain close to their homeworld, but a growing number now step into wider galactic society as explorers, scouts, engineers, diplomats, and warriors—seeking adventure, purpose, or a chance to prove that their people are far more than the galaxy’s jokes suggest.
Home Planet: Naboo
Physical Description: Gungans are tall, flexible humanoids ranging from about 1.6 to 2 meters in height. Their bodies are adapted to an amphibious lifestyle: strong leg muscles for powerful swimming and leaping, hardy lungs that can hold breath for extended periods, and a flexible, largely cartilaginous skeletal structure. Their long faces end in tough, flexible bills used for rooting out food, and many adults develop whiskers that signal maturity.
Distinctive eyestalks, long floppy ears, and muscular tongues complete their unusual profile. Their skin secretes a mucus with waterproofing properties—useful both underwater and in their notorious habit of “Gungan waterproofing” gear. Though their posture and speech patterns can appear comical to some, in battle Gungans are coordinated, disciplined, and far more formidable than their detractors expect.
Average Height: 1.8 meters
Average Weight: 70 kilograms
Age of Adulthood: 16 standard years
Personality & Customs: Gungans tend to be inquisitive, cautious, and initially suspicious of outsiders. Their society is highly stratified and community-oriented, with city-based clans ruled by local leaders who answer to a High Council. They place great value on peace and social order and enforce even minor laws with seriousness, which has led to a reputation for strict justice and exile for those who step too far out of line. Despite this caution, Gungans are not timid. They admire strength, cleverness, and those willing to stand up for their people. The Grand Army is both a defense force and a cultural symbol—a reminder of their warrior past and their capacity to protect Naboo’s ecosystems. Gungans are deeply tied to their environment, favoring technology that works with, not against, the natural world. Many feel an intuitive connection to the Living Force, even if relatively few become Jedi. Adventuring Gungans often begin as scouts, hunters, or soldiers leaving the safety of underwater cities to explore the wider galaxy. Some seek to reclaim a sense of ancient honor, others are driven by curiosity, and a few are exiles looking for redemption or simply a new start among the stars.
Languages: Gunganese and Basic (spoken with a distinctive accent).
