The Next Generation of Star Wars Tabletop Adventure

    Nagai

The Nagai are a pale-skinned, blade-loving humanoid species whose reputation across the galaxy wavers somewhere between honorable warriors and ominous invaders. When they first emerged from the Unknown Regions, many believed they were a conquering force bent on domination. In truth, the Nagai were fleeing a brutal war with their long-time oppressors, the Tofs, and later forged a tense alliance of convenience with the New Republic to continue that struggle. To outsiders, this complicated history, combined with their cold demeanor and lethal skill, makes the Nagai both fascinating and deeply unsettling.

Culturally, the Nagai are defined by an intense sense of personal honor and an almost absolute commitment to individual freedom. They fear practically nothing… except the return of chains—literal or metaphorical. The memory of enslavement and manipulation by their enemies has left a deep scar on their collective psyche, shaping a people who would rather die on their feet than live under another’s heel. They care fiercely for their own families, clans, and sworn allies, but have little concern for strangers unless duty, honor, or a binding oath compels them to act.

Melee combat is woven into Nagai identity. From a young age, Nagai are trained in the use of blades of all kinds—knives, swords, and other edged weapons are as common to them as tools or utensils. For most Nagai, a blade is not just a weapon, but a personal statement: an extension of their will, their style, and their honor. It is rare to meet a Nagai who is not a consummate knife fighter, and rarer still to find one who is unarmed.

Beneath their porcelain-white skin and sharp style choices lies a charismatic presence that is easy to underestimate. The Nagai possess an enhanced vocal range and subtle control over tone and pitch, allowing them to tailor their speech to be soothing, compelling, or disorienting when they choose. Combined with their grim, often dark wit, this makes them dangerous negotiators—or unnervingly calm threats. Even when they speak in Basic, the musical cadence of their native language, Nagaian, lingers in the way they shape words.

In the wider galaxy, Nagai are often encountered as mercenaries, duelists, scouts, spies, pirates, or deadly specialists in narrow, high-risk roles. Some have walked the path of the Jedi or other Force traditions, though no cohesive, species-wide Force order is known among their people. Whether they stand with empires, alliances, or only themselves, one thing is constant: a Nagai is almost never harmless, and never without a blade close at hand.

    Home Planet: Nagi (Unknown Regions)
Physical Description: Nagai are slender Near-Human humanoids with striking, almost ethereal features. They possess porcelain-white skin, straight black hair, and dark or red-tinged eyes that stand out starkly against their pale complexions. Many also exhibit subtle facial markings or patterns that further emphasize their sharp, angular features. Their ears tend to be slightly pointed, adding to their otherworldly and somewhat predatory appearance. Nagai builds are typically lean and wiry rather than heavily muscled, with an almost delicate frame that belies their deadly efficiency in combat. Their movements are graceful, deliberate, and precise, reflecting a lifetime of training in close-quarters fighting. While their overall proportions are similar to Humans, Nagai posture and expression often convey a kind of controlled stillness—like a duelist waiting for the precise moment to strike. No two Nagai dress alike. Personal appearance is an important expression of individuality, and clothing can range from severe, utilitarian outfits to flamboyant or highly stylized attire. Many favor layered garments, long coats, or flowing pieces that conceal weapons and armor plates without sacrificing mobility. Subtle or hidden holsters and sheaths are common, and it is rare to see a Nagai without at least one visible blade on their person.

Personality & Customs: Nagai are disciplined, focused, and intensely driven by personal codes of honor. They are not casual killers, but they will kill without hesitation if they believe honor, necessity, or an oath demands it. Victory holds great meaning for them—especially hard-fought, personal victories—and they remember their triumphs and defeats with equal clarity. Their humor is dry, often grim, and frequently used to unsettle rivals or mask their true feelings behind a veneer of sardonic calm. Their strongest loyalties are reserved for family, close companions, and those to whom they have sworn binding obligations. Outside that circle, Nagai can appear cold, detached, or even uncaring. Helping outsiders is rarely done out of simple altruism; instead, they act when it serves a strategic goal, fulfills a bargain, or aligns with their personal code. Betrayal of oaths or exploitation of their people is remembered for generations—and repaid. Freedom is central to Nagai identity. The memory of past enslavement and exile has left them with a near-phobic aversion to captivity and domination. Attempts to control or restrain a Nagai—physically, politically, or emotionally—tend to backfire violently. They respect strength, clarity of purpose, and those who meet them without fear, but have little patience for bluster, empty threats, or obvious manipulation. Socially, the Nagai can be magnetic yet unsettling. Their naturally soothing voices, capable of subtle shifts in pitch and tone, make their words easy to listen to even when the content is chilling. Combined with their controlled expressions and penetrating gaze, this gives them a presence that feels simultaneously calming and dangerous, like speaking with someone who has already calculated three ways to kill you and is simply choosing not to—for now.
