    Ugnaught

Ugnaughts are tireless laborers and ingenious craftspeople hailing from the prespaceflight world of Gentes in the Anoat System. Known for their porcine features, stocky frames, and unshakable grit, Ugnaughts built a culture rooted in clan loyalty, generational craft mastery, and a deeply internalized work ethic. For thousands of years their isolation left them technologically behind the galactic mainstream, a vulnerability exploited by raiders and slavers who abducted entire Ugnaught city-states and forced them into labor across the galaxy. Even after the Old Republic formally outlawed slavery, Ugnaughts continued to be trafficked, rebranded as 'indentured workers' who were expected to repay the cost of their own displacement.

Despite this history, Ugnaughts carved out thriving communities far from Gentes—most famously in Bespin’s Cloud City, where tens of thousands settled and transformed the floating metropolis into a marvel of engineering through their expertise in mining, metallurgy, and heavy machinery. Their pride in this accomplishment runs deep; many consider Cloud City a second homeworld. Ugnaught society revolves around clans specializing in a single profession, from mining to metalwork to gas harvesting. Every child is expected to inherit the family craft, and upon reaching adulthood, they must prove themselves worthy of joining that profession. In overcrowded trades, these tests can involve brutal duels to the death—a stark contrast to the otherwise peaceful, conflict-averse nature of the species.

Though small in stature, Ugnaughts possess remarkable resilience, endurance, and mechanical intuition. Their reputation for reliability is legendary, and many employers—ethical or not—praise Ugnaught efficiency. However, insulting an Ugnaught’s craftsmanship is deeply offensive, and their terse, declarative speech patterns often end with the culturally significant phrase: 'I have spoken.'

Home Planet: Gentes, a harsh prespaceflight world in the Anoat System.
Physical Description: Ugnaughts are short, porcine humanoids with stout builds, upturned snouts, layered jowls, and coarse white or gray hair. They typically stand between 1.0 and 1.6 meters tall, with compact frames built for hard labor in harsh environments. Their skin ranges from pale pink to ruddy tones, and many possess small tusks used historically in ritualized blood duels. Their rugged biology grants exceptional stamina and resistance to toxic environments, making them ideal miners and industrial workers. Ugnaughts raised in subterranean or industrial settlements often show thicker jowls, tougher skin, or naturally heightened resistance to airborne irritants. Their movements tend to be deliberate and efficient, with a utilitarian approach to clothing and ornamentation.

Average Height: Most Ugnaught adults stand between 1.0 and 1.6 meters tall.
Average Weight: Ugnaughts tend to weigh between 30 and 60 kilograms, stocky and dense for their size.
Age of Adulthood: Ugnaughts reach adulthood at 20 years and can live over 200 years.

Personality & Customs: Ugnaughts are steadfast, patient, industrious, and fiercely devoted to their clan and craft. They believe that work defines identity, and an Ugnaught without a task to perform grows restless, irritable, or anxious. Their speech is typically concise and direct, often punctuated by the culturally resonant declaration 'I have spoken,' signaling finality and resolve.

Ugnaught society is clan-based, with each family bound to a specific trade passed down for generations. Children are trained from a young age, and adulthood brings a trial to determine their suitability for joining the ranks of their profession. In trades with limited openings, these trials may escalate to fatal duels—an ancient and brutal tradition that persists despite the species’ otherwise peaceful temperament. Ugnaughts avoid boasting but take immense pride in quality craftsmanship, and accusing an Ugnaught’s work of malfunctioning is a grave insult. They value order, dedication, and the quiet dignity of a job done well.

Centuries of slavery and exploitation have also shaped their worldview. Many Ugnaughts remain wary of outsiders, especially those in positions of authority. At the same time, they excel at integrating into industrial societies, forming tight communal enclaves wherever they settle—whether in the mines of Lothal, the factories of Coruscant, or the vast lower levels of Cloud City.

Languages: Ugnaughts speak their native language of grunts, squeals, and clicks. Many understand Basic, though relatively few speak it fluently.
