What is Aurebesh?
Aurebesh is the writing system for Galactic Basic Standard, the common tongue spoken across the Star Wars galaxy — from the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon to the signage of a Coruscant cantina. Its name comes from its first two characters, Aurek and Besh, the same way “alphabet” comes from alpha and beta. The script has appeared throughout the films, series, and games, and fans have long used it to write messages hidden in plain sight.
Because Aurebesh is a direct one-to-one substitution for the Latin alphabet, translating is simple: every English letter has exactly one Aurebesh glyph. There are also a handful of digraphs — single symbols for common letter pairs like ch, ae, sh, and th — plus its own numerals and punctuation. This translator maps each character you type to its glyph using the authentic letterforms.
Using it in your game
Writing in Aurebesh is a great way to bring a Star Wars campaign to life. Hand your players a “datapad” with a clue in Aurebesh, label a map, letter a faction banner, or engrave a character’s name onto their gear. In SWURPG you can even etch Aurebesh straight onto a weapon in the Blaster Builder, or design a whole hero in the Character Builder.
