About SWURPG

A free, fan-made tabletop roleplaying game for the Star Wars universe — designed to be played at the table, not memorized from a rulebook.

What SWURPG is

SWURPG (the Star Wars Universe Roleplaying Game) is a complete tabletop RPG system built from scratch as a love letter to the d20-era Saga Edition and to the approachability of modern D&D 5e. It includes core rules, 90+ playable species, 6 base classes with 18 advanced subclasses, weapons / armor / gear / upgrades catalogs, 60+ Force powers, a full bestiary, a multi-session adventure module, and a browser-based character builder that handles every derived stat for you.

Every rule, page, and tool on this site is free to use. There's no paywall, no ads, and no third-party tracking — see the privacy policy for the specifics.

Design philosophy

  • Saga Edition depth, 5e ease. SWURPG inherits the granular weapon / armor / Force-power surface of Saga Edition, but uses 5e's action-economy, advantage / disadvantage, and proficiency-bonus math so any D&D player can sit down and play.
  • Era-agnostic by design. The rules don't hard-code any single Star Wars era. Every adventure, NPC stat block, and species lore entry works in the Old Republic, the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic, the First Order era, or anywhere else your table wants to play.
  • Built for the table, not the bookshelf. Every piece of content is sized to be readable on a phone or laptop during a session. The character builder produces a printable PDF you can write on. Adventures ship as both player-safe landing pages and downloadable GM PDFs.
  • Active and improving. SWURPG is under active development. Rules get clarified, the catalog grows, and builder bugs get fixed as they're reported. The site you visit next month will be a little better than the one you're reading today.

Who built this

SWURPG is a small fan project — built and maintained by a single designer with help from playtesters and the broader TTRPG community. It's a non-commercial labor of love, not a studio product. If you find a bug, have a rules question, or want to suggest an addition, that feedback is genuinely welcome and shapes the roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

Is SWURPG free to use?
Yes. Every rule, page, and tool on swurpg.com is free. There's no paywall, no ads, and no third-party tracking. The character builder, rules library, monster bestiary, adventure modules, and pre-made characters are all open-access.
Is SWURPG official, or affiliated with Lucasfilm or Disney?
No. SWURPG is an independent, non-commercial fan project. Star Wars and all related characters, names, and locations are trademarks of Lucasfilm Ltd. / The Walt Disney Company. The site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Lucasfilm or Disney. All trademarks are used under fair-use principles for non-commercial fan-fiction commentary.
How does SWURPG differ from Star Wars Saga Edition or D&D 5e?
SWURPG inherits the granular weapon, armor, and Force-power surface of the d20-era Star Wars Saga Edition, but uses D&D 5e's action-economy (1 Action / 1 Bonus Action / 1 Reaction), advantage and disadvantage system, and proficiency-bonus math. The result is faster table play than Saga while keeping more mechanical depth than 5e for ranged combat, gear customization, and the Force.
What Star Wars era does SWURPG take place in?
Any era. SWURPG is era-agnostic by design. The rules don't hard-code a specific period — every species, class, monster, and adventure works in the Old Republic, the High Republic, the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic, the First Order era, or anywhere else your table wants to play. The GM picks the era; the prose works regardless.
How do I start playing SWURPG?
If you're a player, open the character builder, pick a species and class, and export your sheet to PDF — you'll have a playable L1 character in about 5 minutes. If you're a GM, read the rules hub for the system overview, pick an adventure module, hand the player landing page to your group, and download the GM PDF. The Signal from Tellan-7 is a 5-session beginner adventure designed for new groups.
Do I need any books or paid material to play SWURPG?
No. Every rule needed to play is on the website for free. You only need dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20), a character sheet (printable from the builder), and pen and paper for tracking HP and Force Points during play.
Does SWURPG have a character builder?
Yes. The browser-based character builder at swurpg.com/character-builder handles every derived stat — HP, AC, attack bonuses, skill modifiers, Force-power eligibility, ASI traits, carry weight — and exports to a printable PDF. It supports levels 1 through 20 and all 6 base classes plus 18 advanced subclasses.
