Character of the Week
This week's Character of the Week doesn't win fights. He ends them before they start. Meet Velerre, a level 4 Fosh Leader on the Diplomat track — Vergere's rare, secretive species, built in the free Character Builder as the kind of negotiator who is already three moves ahead by the time he finally speaks.

Velerre is a face built to run a room without raising his voice. Persuasion and Deception both sit at +7 and Insight at +4 — all Expertise — so he talks people into deals, talks them out of their lies, and always knows which of the two is happening. Knowledge: Galactic Lore at +6 means he walks in already knowing who's who and who owes whom. He isn't helpless if it turns loud — AC 17, HP 32, a quick +7 initiative, and he's fast on his feet — but that's his failure state, not his plan. And Healing Tears hands him a closing move no academy teaches: when someone at the table is hurt, a Fosh's tears can knit the wound shut. It's disarming, intimate, and it makes a being very slow to lie to him afterward.
His story
Velerre was born on a world he will not name, to a people the galaxy has all but forgotten. The Fosh are few, and they prefer it that way: feathered, beaked, soft of voice, and far cleverer than their gentle manner lets on. Most beings live and die without ever meeting one. Velerre decided early that this was an advantage. A species no one understands is a species no one sees coming.
He found his calling on Dac, the drowned world its natives call Mon Cala, where the Mon Calamari and the Quarren have shared a single ocean planet and never quite shared anything else. He arrived as a nobody: a small, strange bird of a being with no stake in either people's grievances, which was exactly why both sides eventually let him into the room. He learned Mon Calamarian and Quarrenese not as a scholar but as a listener, until he understood the two languages and the older resentment sitting under both.
What Velerre does isn't only charm, though he has plenty of that. It's patience and homework. He walks into a negotiation already knowing which councillor's shipyard is quietly failing, which Quarren elder lost family in the last flare of violence, and what each side actually needs as opposed to what it keeps shouting for. By the time he speaks, he has usually found the shape of an agreement no one else could see, and he lets the other party believe they thought of it first. His own people call the knack Sly Demeanor. Everyone else just finds it faintly unnerving.
When a table turns to grief, when someone is hurt and the whole fragile peace threatens to go up with them, Velerre does the one thing no diplomatic academy can teach. He weeps, and where a Fosh's tears fall, wounds close and pain loosens its grip. It is an intimate thing to be shown, and he spends it with great care. A being who can heal you is a being you are slow to lie to.
Underneath the diplomat's polish runs a quieter set of habits, the ones that keep a soft-spoken bird alive in hard rooms. He does his reconnaissance long before anyone offers him a chair, carries more of other people's secrets than he ever lets show, and would always rather talk his way out of a room than fight his way through it. Slight, quick, and easy to underestimate, he has walked out of places that by rights should have ended him, usually with the treaty folded under one wing.
And if there is something deeper behind that unshakeable calm — the old rumour that has trailed every Fosh since Vergere — Velerre will neither confirm it nor deny it. He only tilts his head, and smiles, and changes the subject.
