Star Wars is coming to D&D
At Gen Con on July 30, Wizards of the Coast confirmed the thing a lot of us have been house-ruling for years: Star Wars is coming to Dungeons & Dragons. It's part of a new Universes Beyond line — the same licensed-crossover model that's been a runaway hit for Magic: The Gathering — now arriving on the tabletop RPG.
The rollout starts with D&D × World of Warcraft on November 17, 2026 (Azeroth on the tabletop for the first time in two decades), with a Dark Sun revival alongside it. Then the surprise: Star Wars lands in 2027.
What it probably looks like
Wizards hasn't shown the Star Wars book yet, so anything specific is a guess. But the WoW pitch is a strong tell — "recreate your main or roll an alt, explore the zones, delve the dungeons." Read: these are licensed crossover supplements that run on the 5e chassis, letting you bring a beloved world to a system tens of millions of people already know, rather than a ground-up bespoke ruleset.
For Star Wars, that's genuinely exciting. A canonical, WotC-made way to play a Jedi or a smuggler on 5e's familiar bones is going to be great, and it'll pull a wave of new players to the table.
The catch: 2027 is a while away
Here's the thing — that's a year and a half out, and it'll be a book (or a few) you buy. If the announcement made you want to roll a Twi'lek gunslinger this weekend, you don't have to wait.
You can play Star Wars on a 5e-style system today
That's exactly why SWURPG exists. It's a free, fan-made Star Wars tabletop RPG built on a clean d20 core — if you've played 5e, you're already most of the way there: ability scores, proficiency, advantage/disadvantage, attack rolls and saves all work the way you expect. On top of that it's Star Wars first: Force points instead of spell slots, lightsaber forms, stun and ion damage, droids as a real playable species.
And because it lives on the web, it comes with the things a printed book can't:
- A character builder that rolls a complete, playable hero in about 90 seconds — a deep roster of playable species, all six classes, weapon and armor upgrades, Force powers, and a printable sheet.
- A starship builder, a lightsaber builder, a galaxy map of 2,000+ systems, ready-to-run adventures, monster stat blocks, and a name generator.
- Nothing to mail-order. Open it and play.
Coming from D&D specifically? There's a page for that: how SWURPG compares to D&D 5e — what carries over, what's different, and how to convert your instincts.
So — wait, or play?
Both, honestly. The official Universes Beyond Star Wars book in 2027 will be worth grabbing; buy it when it lands. But it's a year and a half of Tuesdays away, and it's a supplement, not a full toolkit. If you want to run a Star Wars campaign now — or you just want a complete system with builders and generators a book will never include — start a character and you're playing tonight.
(SWURPG is an independent, non-commercial fan project. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Wizards of the Coast, Lucasfilm, or Disney — just made by fans who didn't want to wait.)
