Backstory
Leno H'krai was born on Nagi, the distant and shrouded homeworld at the edge of the galaxy's Wild Space frontier, where the Nagai people had long cultivated a culture of blade-discipline, cold precision, and an almost reverent relationship with silence. His pale, angular features and near-colorless eyes marked him unmistakably as Nagai — a species that most in the Core Worlds knew only through rumor and travelers' exaggerations. That distance from galactic civilization had shaped Leno before the Force ever did. He was young when a Jedi survey vessel made contact with a small Nagai trading settlement near the outer edge of Nagi's orbit, part of the ongoing Jedi expansion effort during the High Republic's ambitious era of frontier outreach. The Jedi aboard — a Mirialan Sentinel named Cova Tessek — detected a latent Force-sensitivity in the boy that was difficult to ignore. Tessek described it later in her mission log as quiet but structured, like a blade resting in its sheath. The Jedi Council on Coruscant approved the invitation, and with the muted, composed acceptance typical of Nagai stoicism, Leno's family released him to the Order. His early years at the Jedi Temple were not easy. His naturally low charisma — what peers read as coldness and what instructors sometimes called detachment — made him few friends and drew more than a few concerned evaluations. But where social grace failed him, discipline and acuity thrived. He developed a sharp instinct for Perception, studying the behavior of others from a careful remove. His training in Mechanics became a private obsession, hours spent disassembling and reassembling equipment in the Temple's lower workshops with the focused economy of motion his culture prized. His Scout-Web Armor, sourced from a frontier supply depot on Takodana during a training assignment, had been repaired and re-fitted by his own hands three times over. His Force abilities manifested quietly. Force Healing came first — a reflection, perhaps, of some buried tenderness behind the Nagai reserve. Valor followed, a power his Master found unexpectedly fitting: not courage born of warmth, but the steady, structural resolve of someone who had already calculated the cost and accepted it. His dueling lightsaber, a lean and unadorned weapon, sat rarely used at his hip — less a statement of readiness than a reminder of obligation. By his third year as a Padawan under the watchful guidance of Master Tessek, Leno had participated in two frontier stabilization deployments along the Nihil-contested Outer Rim corridors, silent operations requiring stealth, precise communication relay work, and steady nerve. He had not been tested in true combat. That awareness lived with him — not as fear, but as an unresolved equation.
Roleplaying notes
- **Cold Precision over Instinct:** With DEX 16 as your dominant stat and Expert-level Use the Force, Leno acts deliberately and efficiently in high-pressure moments — pause before declaring actions in combat, speak measured choices aloud, and avoid impulsive declarations that contradict a character who calculates before he commits. - **The Mask of Distance:** A CHA of 6 reflects genuine social difficulty, not affectation — Nagai culture reinforces emotional reserve, so Leno does not try to charm, persuade, or rally; he observes and endures, and should occasionally misread a social situation in ways that create friction rather than resolve it. - **The Equipment Ritual:** Before any mission or rest period, Leno checks and re-checks his Scout-Web Armor, multitool, and comlink in a specific order — this small habit grounds him and signals to attentive allies when he is anxious, because the ritual becomes visible and repetitive under stress. - **Earned Trust, Never Given:** With Expert Perception and strong Insight, Leno reads people carefully before extending anything resembling warmth — he is not hostile toward allies, but he requires demonstrated reliability before he softens, and strangers should feel his assessment of them before they feel his acceptance. - **Spare, Functional Speech:** Leno communicates in short declarative statements with minimal embellishment, favoring technical or observational language drawn from his Mechanics and Use Computer background — he does not explain feelings, he reports conditions, and his rare moments of personal disclosure should feel significant precisely because they are so uncommon.
