Backstory

Before the grafts, before the durasteel ribs and the repulsor-driven lungs, before the cough that never left him, Qymaen jai Sheelal was something the galaxy had no easy word for. He was a *killer*, yes — but a sacred one. On Kalee, beneath skies the color of dried blood, he had led the Izvoshra against the Huk with a ferocity that turned his people's despair into something that resembled hope. He was not a philosopher. He could not articulate why he fought the way he fought, could not have written it down had his life demanded it. But he understood terrain, understood fear, understood the precise moment a man's courage broke before his body did. These were not lessons from books. They were lessons from mud and screaming. The Republic did not come to Kalee's aid. That wound festered long after the Huk war ended — not with a Kaleesh victory, but with a ceasefire brokered by beings who had never set foot on his world and would never lose sleep over it. His people were left indebted, occupied in spirit if not in body, stripped of the dignity that had made all the dying feel purposeful. Qymaen carried that humiliation the way other men carry scars: quietly, and always. When Dooku came, he came with an answer shaped like an offer. The Count spoke of sovereignty, of systems that deserved better than Senate indifference, and somewhere beneath the politics Qymaen heard something simpler — *you were right to be angry*. He did not so much choose the Confederacy as he was handed a framework for the hatred he had already built his life around. The surgery followed. The IG-100 MagnaGuards followed. The lightsabers — Jedi lightsabers, pulled from dead hands on a dozen worlds — followed after that. He calls his collection a trophy case. He presents it that way to subordinates, to Dooku, to any holographic council that will watch him hold up another blade and name the Order member who once carried it. What he will not say aloud, what his Wisdom has never been sharp enough to excavate from himself, is that the lightsabers are not proof of his strength. They are proof of *survival* — that the Jedi came for him and failed, that the galaxy tried to erase Kalee's greatest warrior and produced this instead. Each hilt is a rebuttal to a universe that has consistently underestimated him. He still wants that universe to *know* it underestimated him. That is the want he cannot satisfy, because no number of kills has quieted it yet. The Republic still stands. The Jedi still send more. And somewhere beneath the vocabulator and the repurposed biology, the Kaleesh who lost everything to a Senate vote is still reaching — coughing in the dark of his command ship, surrounded by droids that cannot tell him whether what he's doing means anything at all.

Roleplaying notes

- **Tactical Expertise (Expert: Knowledge — Tactics):** When entering any encounter or conflict scenario, Grievous should already have a contingency — he identifies exits, weak flanks, and hostage values before he identifies threats. If the tactical situation turns against him, he *acts on that contingency without hesitation*, because surviving is not cowardice to him — it is strategy. - **Graceless Authority (CHA 6, Low WIS):** Grievous cannot charm a room and lacks the self-awareness to realize when he has alienated one. Play him as blunt to the point of offense in diplomatic scenes — not cruel by intention, but utterly without social calibration. He means to inspire; he tends to unsettle. - **The Trophy Ritual:** Whenever Grievous acquires a new lightsaber, he should handle it privately and briefly before adding it to his collection — a moment of quiet that he would deny holding any meaning. This is the closest he comes to introspection, and players who witness it should feel they have seen something he would not want seen. - **Ally Relations (IG-100 MagnaGuards):** Grievous treats his MagnaGuards with something that resembles respect — the only relationship in his life that functions that way — because they do not question him, do not remind him of what he was, and do not survive long enough to disappoint him. - **Speech Pattern (Galactic Basic, Kaleesh origin):** Grievous speaks in clipped, declarative sentences with occasional formal phrasing inherited from Dooku's influence. He never hedges, rarely asks questions, and defaults to commands even when making requests — punctuate dialogue with the mechanical rasp of his vocabulator and the involuntary cough he despises being acknowledged.
