Backstory

He had been dead for a thousand years before the New Republic had a name. Bashel remembered little of the crash itself — only the sensation of the Sith meditation sphere shattering against a moon no cartographer had bothered to chart, and then the cold. The stasis field had held him the way amber holds an insect: perfectly preserved, perfectly helpless. When he finally clawed his way free of the wreckage in 9 ABY, the galaxy that greeted him was unrecognizable. The Empire had collapsed. The Jedi were ghosts. And the Sith — the Sith, as he had known them — were spoken of only in hushed academic tones by scholars who thought them safely extinct. He had been a young man when Tulak Horde took him as a student on Yn, chosen not for warmth or charm but for the thing that lived behind his eyes — a perceptive, almost predatory awareness that Horde recognized as rare. Bashel was never easy company. He was graceless with people in the way that deeply perceptive individuals sometimes are, seeing too much to bother performing. His master had not valued ease. He valued hunger. And Bashel was hungry. Horde taught him to read battle the way others read language — to feel the current of a fight before it crested, to reach into an opponent's will and bend it. The Makashi footwork came naturally to a body built for precision rather than brute force. The dual lightsabers came later, when a training duel left him with a dead right hand for three weeks and forced him to compensate. He never fully corrected the vulnerability on his right side. That gap is still there, buried under decades of muscle memory and pride. What Horde never gave him was completion. Bashel had been days from his final rite of elevation when the sphere went down. He woke a thousand years later still carrying the incompleteness of it — still, technically, an apprentice. That word sits in him like a splinter. He found the Nightsister texts by accident, salvaging what he could from a crashed Separatist frigate on Dathomir's outskirts in 14 ABY. The magick in those scrolls was wrong in ways that fascinated him — not the clean architecture of Sith sorcery but something older, stranger, woven from the land itself. He spent four years learning it badly, then two more learning it well. The smoke demon that answers his call now is not what the Nightsisters summoned. It is something he made. He is not certain it is entirely under his control. What he wants — what he has wanted since the moment he understood how much time had passed — is to complete what Tulak Horde began. Not resurrection, not revenge. Legitimacy. There are Sith teachings sealed in holocrons scattered across a galaxy that has forgotten them, and Bashel is perhaps the only being alive who can read them fluently. He needs only to find them before the New Republic's nascent Jedi Order does. The cost is that he suspects, in his most honest moments, that Horde would not have elevated him. That the crash was not accident. That the meditation sphere was not malfunctioning. He has not yet let himself finish that thought.

Roleplaying notes

- **Perceptive to a Fault (WIS 23 / Insight):** Bashel reads people faster than he means to — play this as a subtle habit of finishing others' sentences or naming emotions before the speaker has acknowledged them, which unsettles allies as often as it impresses them. - **The Incomplete Apprentice (Backstory / CHA 16):** His social bluntness is not cruelty; it is the residue of a man who spent centuries among one master and now genuinely does not know how to negotiate status with peers — default to formal address and short directives rather than persuasion or warmth. - **Duelist's Ritual (Makashi / Jar'Kai):** Before any expected confrontation, Bashel runs a slow single-handed form with his off-hand saber — right side only, compensating for his old vulnerability — treat this as a tell that signals he considers a fight genuinely dangerous. - **Isolation as Default (Backstory / Survival):** He trusts sustained competence over personal loyalty; he will cooperate with allies who demonstrate skill and become quietly, dangerously cold toward those who make the same mistake twice. - **Archaic Diction (Languages / Era Displacement):** A thousand years of vocabulary drift means Bashel occasionally uses Old Republic-era idioms or formal Sith titles that no one present recognizes — play these moments straight, never as jokes, and let others' confusion land without explanation.
