Backstory

Nobody in the Black Sun ever meant to raise a child. They meant to sell one. The Sakavians were already a dying people when the syndicate's acquisitions crew swept through the Mid Rim fringe around 15 BBY, cleaning out what little the species had left. Most of what they found went to Imperial xenobiological programs or private collectors. Darter was too small even for that market — diminutive even by Sakavian standards, pale yellow where his kin ran gold, and constitutionally unimpressive in every way a slaver's ledger cared about. Vigo Marseen Thult, a Black Sun lieutenant running a spice corridor between Kessel and Nar Shaddaa, looked at the tiny creature and made the only calculation that made sense: overhead was low. So Darter grew up in cargo bays and back-channel cantinas, watching adults lie to each other for money. He turned out to be a natural student. He never learned to fight. At 0.6 meters and built like a loth-rat, he had no business learning. What he learned instead was faces — how they opened when they felt safe, how they closed when they smelled threat — and he learned that a creature small enough to be overlooked is never truly being watched. By the time he was running his own spice drops along the Outer Rim at the onset of the Galactic Civil War, Imperials who questioned him at checkpoints would wave him through before he finished the second sentence. He was too small to be dangerous. He was too cheerful to be lying. The cost came later. It always does. A route through the Maw installation's shadow corridors went wrong somewhere around 2 BBY. The contact was rolled up by ISB. The spice was lost. Three Black Sun associates Darter had vouched for personally were taken to an Imperial detention facility on Scarif, and they did not come back. Darter could have run the coordinates that saved them. He ran different coordinates instead — coordinates that saved the shipment. He told himself it was what Thult would have wanted. He told himself it was survival mathematics. He still tells himself that, on long hyperspace jumps, in the dark, when his wisdom is the only voice in the room. He did not betray them to the Imperials. He simply did not save them. He knows the difference. He is not entirely sure it is a difference. Now, with a bounty quietly accumulating under four separate aliases across Imperial customs databases, Darter Sepics sits aboard a mid-range passenger transport clutching a sweepstakes voucher torn from a blue milk carton. The vacation is real. The contraband in the false-bottomed carry case beneath his seat is also real. He wants, more than anything, enough credits to buy out his Black Sun obligation entirely — to own his routes, his cargo, his name. Thult is getting old. The syndicate is watching. And Darter, for the first time in fifty years, is calculating coordinates for himself alone. He just hasn't run them yet.

Roleplaying notes

- **The Mouth is the Weapon:** With no arms, armor, or combat skills worth mentioning, Darter's Expert-level Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion are his only defense in a fight — lean into this hard. When violence becomes possible, Darter should already be talking, and he should not stop until the situation has moved somewhere he controls. - **Small and Overlooked, Not Small and Harmless:** Darter's Diminutive size and high Wisdom reflect decades of reading rooms before entering them — play him as someone who has already assessed every person at the table before he sits down, but who lets others assume he hasn't. - **The Farmer Mask:** Darter maintains his moisture farmer cover story with practiced, unhurried ease — when meeting strangers, default to this identity first, complete with small complaints about vaporator yields and moisture taxes, before revealing anything real. - **Loyalty Through Debt, Not Warmth:** Darter does not make friends easily and does not pretend to — he makes arrangements. Allies earn his reliability by proving useful or trustworthy over time, and he expresses affection almost exclusively through competent, unrequested favors. - **Diminutive Diction:** Darter speaks in the measured cadence of someone who learned Galactic Basic as a second language in smoky syndicate back rooms — unhurried, slightly formal, and always one clause longer than necessary, as though he is buying time to decide whether he needs to lie.
