Backstory

Kel Bantra was raised in a frontier garrison town on Junction-9, a dust-choked Mid-Rim relay world where Imperial patrols and free-trader convoys passed each other on the same rail spur. His mother was a corpsman attached to a planetary defense unit; his father ran a small fabrication shop that retooled cargo droids for civilian use. Blaster fire was background noise, helmets came off only at dinner, and Kel learned early that calm hands and a clear voice could de-escalate things faster than another rifle ever would.

He enlisted at sixteen out of a sense of duty he couldn't quite name and stayed in for the squad. He moved through three deployments — guard duty, two convoy escorts, and a brief, ugly counter-insurgency on a moon nobody could find on the public charts — and earned a reputation as the trooper who checked every corner before he let anyone else walk through it. He preferred a sidearm and a sword to a heavy rifle; the rifle made distance, and distance made mistakes.

The last posting went wrong. An ambush on a humanitarian convoy ended with half his unit dead and the survivors carrying the wounded twelve klicks through canyon country to extraction. The official report praised his composure. Kel came home, drank for two months, and then mustered out without another word.

Now he hires on as a private guard — for traders running goods through unsettled hyperlanes, for refugee transports nobody else will protect, for anyone who can't afford the polished mercenary outfits and needs someone who'll show up sober and stay between them and trouble. He still folds his bedroll the same way every morning. He still owes the squadmate who didn't make it out a debt he can't repay, and he intends to spend the rest of his life paying it forward to whoever needs him next.

Roleplaying Tips

  • Calm Under Fire: Combat Focus and squad-trained reflexes mean Kel rolls high on Initiative and stays composed when blaster fire opens up — describe him taking a single breath, sighting carefully with Point Blank Shot, and firing measured shots rather than panicked sprays.
  • The Convoy: Kel still carries the ambush that took half his unit. Protecting non-combatants and civilians is his primary motivator; he will refuse orders that abandon someone vulnerable, even from a paying client.
  • Bedroll Discipline: Folds his bedroll the same way every morning, cleans his blaster nightly, takes meals slowly. Lean on small, repeated rituals to ground him after a long day on edge.
  • Spoken Plain: Kel talks like a soldier — short, factual sentences, no flourishes. "Copy that" instead of "I understand." Avoid metaphors, avoid charm; let his actions earn the room's trust.
  • Earned Loyalty: Kel offers no automatic warmth to strangers, employers, or even fellow mercs. But once someone has held the line beside him in a real fight, his loyalty is total — he will burn favors, break orders, and walk into fire for them without hesitation.
