Character of the Week
This week's Character of the Week talks first and shoots second. Meet Taya, a level 3 Devaronian Scoundrel on the Bounty Hunter track — built in the free Character Builder as an ace pilot who would far rather charm or frighten a mark's crew into looking away than shoot her way through them.

Taya is built to work a room and win a chase. Pilot sits at +7 Expertise — she's the one who says "I can make that jump" and then makes it, which is half of what keeps a bounty hunter alive when the mark runs. Deception and Intimidation both land at +6, also Expertise, so she opens every job with charm and closes it with a threat, and Devilish Charm stacks right on top: Advantage whenever she leans on someone, and a second chance the one time a lie doesn't take. She isn't built to trade fire — AC 13, HP 24, no armor to speak of — but with DEX 16 she rarely has to stand still long enough to get hit. Her one real gap is Wisdom, and it plays less like a weakness than like nerve: she reads everyone else perfectly and her own risk not at all.
Her story
Taya came out wrong, by Devaron's reckoning. On her homeworld the women keep their fur and their good sense — horns dulled to bumps, feet on the ground, running the clans while the men chase the horizon and mostly don't come back. Taya was born red-skinned and sharp-horned, with the wanderer's itch already under her hide, and her mothers never quite knew what to do with her. She solved it for them: the first freighter that would take a horned girl who could already talk her way past a docking clerk, she was on it, and she never looked back.
She learned the rest on the move. Flying came first — she took to a cockpit like she'd been strapped into one at birth, and a decade of hot landings on worse worlds made her the kind of pilot you hire for the runs nobody else will make. The talking came with it: a smile that opens doors, a voice that closes them, and — when the smile doesn't take — a way of leaning into a threat that makes hard men reconsider. Smuggling paid. Cons paid better, until they didn't. Bounty work paid best of all, and it was just her old life with a target's face on it: chase someone across the galaxy, outfly whatever they run, talk or frighten your way through everyone in between, and collect. It suited her down to the horns.
Now she works the Rim out of a fast, ugly ship held together by spite and spare parts, taking the jobs that need a pilot who won't flinch and a hunter who can walk into a cantina full of a mark's friends and walk back out with the mark. She's good — genuinely — and she knows it, which is the problem. Taya reads a room better than anyone in it and trusts her own gut least of all; the same nerve that lands her the impossible jobs walks her into rooms she should have cased first. One of these days a bounty's going to be smarter than she is. She's betting it hasn't happened yet.
