How We Use AI

Last updated: November 7, 2026

SWURPG is built and maintained by one person. AI is a large part of why that is possible, and this page is the plain version of where it gets used, where it does not, and what is checked before anything reaches you.

The short version

Most of the written content here — species lore, blog posts, adventure text, changelog entries — is drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by a human before it publishes. The character portraits and much of the site art are AI-generated. The game rules are not.

Why AI, for a Star Wars project specifically

The Star Wars corpus is enormous and it is split. Nearly fifty years of films, series, novels, comics and games, divided since 2014 into current canon and Legends, with the same character or world often documented differently on each side of that line. Getting a species' homeworld, grid coordinate or first appearance right means checking it, every time.

That is the main thing AI does here: verification at a scale one person could not sustain by hand. Every factual claim in a species entry — homeworld, biology, named members, which episodes a species actually appeared in — is looked up against Wookieepedia and the Saga Edition reference rather than recalled from memory. That rule exists because the alternative failed: early galaxy-map work placed several species on the wrong homeworlds because the facts were remembered instead of checked, and every one of them had to be corrected.

Where sources are thin or contradict each other, the page says so. You will see notes like (Assumption: …) or (In Legends, …) written directly into the lore. Those are deliberate. They mark the boundary between what is documented and what is extrapolation, so you can judge for yourself instead of trusting the page wholesale.

What AI does not decide

  • The rules. Mechanics, damage formulas, DCs, action economy, species balance and every number in the catalog are human decisions. AI does not invent a mechanic, change an existing one, or quietly adjust a formula. For a game people actually run at a table, a hallucinated rule is worse than no rule, so this line is held hard.
  • What counts as canon. AI is used to find and check lore, never to fabricate it. If something cannot be sourced it either does not ship, or it ships explicitly flagged as an assumption.
  • Whether it publishes. Nothing goes live unreviewed. Every species, post and rules change is read by a human first.

Images

Portraits and illustrations on the site are generated with AI tools as non-commercial fan reference, as set out in the fan-made disclaimer. No official Star Wars film or television imagery is reproduced here.

The generators you run yourself

The backstory and name generators are a different thing, and worth understanding as such. They produce text live, on demand, from your character — which means nobody reviews that output before you see it. Treat it as a first draft to edit, not as settled lore. The Terms of Use cover this directly.

Your data

Character context is sent to the AI provider only when you ask for a generation, and the request is not kept beyond fulfilling it. Your characters are not used to train any model. The privacy policy lists every third-party service involved.

When we get it wrong

We will, occasionally — a date, a homeworld, a species detail somebody knows better than we do. That is worth telling us about. Use the requests page or the Discord, and corrections get made.
