No Squib Takes the First Offer

· 5 min read

The Squib are playable in SWURPG. Their fur appraises what they are holding, they get Advantage on haggling, and they physically cannot accept an opening price.

The drawback is the whole character

Most species drawbacks are a tax. You take a penalty somewhere quiet and get on with your build.

The Squib drawback is Never the First Offer, and it is the most fun thing in this batch: you cannot accept an opening price. Not "you shouldn't" — you can't. The first offer made to you in any negotiation must be refused and countered, and where circumstances make refusing impossible, you take Disadvantage on that check.

So the one species in the catalog with Advantage on haggling is also the one that can be talked into a worse deal by being offered a good one first. Hand a Squib exactly what they asked for and watch them negotiate themselves backwards out of it. They're playable now, in the catalog and the Character Builder.

A business built on other people's garbage

Skor II sits in the Outer Rim, governed by the Squib Polyanarchy under a king who makes a point of not interfering. The real power is commercial: a species-wide salvage operation whose reclamation fleets shadow capital ships and wait for them to dump their refuse.

The culture around it is stranger and better than "they like money". Squibs value the process over the spoils. A good deal, by their reckoning, is one where both sides believed at least once that they were winning. Cheating is acceptable; outright lying is not. They keep a word in Old High Squibbian for the novelty value of an item in a negotiation, as distinct from what it is actually worth. They have a holiday called Haggleday.

Their long-running feud is with the Ugors, a rival scavenger species, and it is conducted mostly through contract disputes over garbage.

One genuinely excellent footnote: when Mace Windu retook the Skor II spaceport from the Confederacy, the Squib king thanked him with a bronzium statue and the honorific "Big Time Hero of Beyond-Squib Eliteness." A trader later nicknamed himself after him.

Appraising Fur is the trait people will underrate. A Squib handed a crate of salvage knows what is in it, roughly how old it is, and what it will fetch — before anyone rolls anything. That turns the standard "we loot the room" beat into a scene where one player can actually say which of the six things is worth carrying.

The Tensor Rifle is a real catalog weapon, not a flavour note: 1d10 Energy, two-handed, Exotic, available from level 3. It throws a manipulated gravitic field that seizes, crushes and repels matter — a tool for pulling a hull plate loose that works just as well on whoever is standing behind the hull plate. Squib owners were also known to fire it purely for the noise, to get the attention of people who were ignoring them.

Speed 20 is deliberate and worth flagging, since Saga Edition gives Squibs 30. Our catalog convention is what decided it: 12 of 19 Small species sit at 20, and every Small species with this exact modifier spread — Chadra-Fan, Latero, Sullustan — is at 20. Nothing in Squib lore says fast. They are 0.8 to 1.2 metre scavengers, not sprinters.

The names are a feature

Squib naming runs to two extremes and nothing between. Working Squibs carry something blunt — Grees, Sligh, Emala, Dono. Traders who want to be taken seriously adopt an elaborate compound: Spilferithimus-narlamos, Smileredon-Verdont, Macemillian-winduarte. The king outdid all of them with Ebareebaveebeedee.

The long form is a status claim rather than a birth name, so a Squib can acquire one mid-career the moment they decide they have earned it. The name generator on the species page builds both kinds.
