Backstory

The Kessurian homeworld keeps its secrets in silence. Its people evolved beneath a dense atmospheric canopy that swallowed sound, forcing an entire civilization to develop something finer than language — a sensitivity to presence, to emotional weather, to the invisible grammar of living things. Romalu Brisla was born into that silence, and the Jedi found him there before he was old enough to know what they were looking for. He was six when the survey team passed through. He was seven when he arrived on Coruscant. He does not remember crying. What he remembers is the feeling that replaced it — not comfort, exactly, but *rightness*. The Force ran through the Jedi Temple the way tidewater runs through estuary grass, and Romalu felt it the moment he crossed the threshold. He pressed his palm flat against one of the old stone corridor walls and stood there until a senior Padawan gently redirected him. He had felt the Temple breathe. Eleven years of training followed. He was not the fastest student, nor the most decorated. In seminars he sat at the edge of discussion, slow to contribute, and when he did speak his words landed strangely — too direct, too unguarded, lacking the social lubricant that made other Padawans likable. Instructors noted his gift and his difficulty in the same breath. The Force, he understood with his whole being. People required translation. His master, Councillor Vayne Osk, recognized something in that gap. Where Romalu's peers pursued combat forms and mission rotations, Osk pressed him deeper into contemplative study — the meditative branches, the art of Farseeing, the passive architecture of Soresu. Not a weapon, but a *witness*. The Jedi Consular path suited him in a way that surprised even Romalu, who had never been certain the Jedi Council's structure suited him at all. The cost came on a routine expedition to the Outer Rim fringe world of Ikkrukk, escorting Osk through a diplomatic dispute between competing trade interests. Romalu had been standing watch at the landing platform's edge when the vision arrived — jagged, premature, wrong in the way Farseeing sometimes goes wrong when emotion bleeds into the signal. He saw fire. He saw Osk's silhouette at the center of it. He moved toward the building without sending word, without waiting, driven by the certainty of it. The fire never came. What came instead was a sudden shift in the local power structure, a departure that happened in minutes, and a transport that did not wait. When Romalu returned to the platform, the ship was gone. His master was gone. His syntherope and medpac were still in his pack. His training saber was still on his belt. He has been making his way back since. Through Ikkrukkian back-settlements, trading on whatever language fluency will buy him a passage, reading the Force for direction the way his people once read atmospheric pressure — searching the current for the particular frequency of a Temple he has known since he was seven years old. He does not know if Osk is searching for him. He does not know if the Council considers him lost or simply delayed. What he knows is that his final trials were weeks away, and that somewhere between a mistimed vision and an empty landing platform, the question of who he is becoming was left open. He intends to answer it. He just needs to find his way home first.

Roleplaying notes

- **Force Over Instinct:** Romalu's Insight and Perception are his sharpest edges — before speaking or acting in any scene, describe him pausing, reading the room through the Force rather than through conversation. He notices what others miss and acts on it quietly, often without explaining himself. - **The CHA Gap Is Real:** With a Charisma of 6, Romalu is not charming, warm in tone, or easy to read socially — his warmth is genuine but it doesn't *transmit* well. He means things sincerely and they still land wrong. Play this as awkward directness, not coldness: he says the true thing at the wrong moment, in the wrong register. - **The Listening Habit:** As a Kessurian, Romalu defaults to stillness before response — when addressed, he doesn't answer immediately. He holds the silence a beat too long, as if checking something inward, before speaking. Use this as a physical ritual at the table: pause visibly before every reply. - **Devotion Without Deference:** Romalu reveres the Force but holds the Jedi Council at arm's length — he follows its teachings without performing loyalty to its authority. When Council doctrine conflicts with what the Force shows him, he will say so, quietly and without apology, to the discomfort of everyone present. - **Sparse and Precise:** Romalu speaks in short declarative statements, rarely elaborating unless pressed. He does not use filler, does not soften language with pleasantries, and tends to quote nothing — his speech has the texture of someone for whom every word costs something.
