Backstory
The Empire does not forget, and neither does Helvetia. She grew up in the outer districts of Nar Shaddaa, the Smugglers' Moon, where the Galactic Civil War arrived not as soldiers and starfighters but as tightened import codes, disappeared neighbors, and ISB informants who wore civilian clothes and took careful notes. Her mother ran a small medpac resale operation — nothing glamorous, nothing heroic. Helvetia swept floors and learned to read people the way a merchant learns to read weather: survival, not talent. She was never the sharpest girl in the district. Numbers slipped away from her, technical manuals might as well have been written in High Bocce, but she could walk into a room and feel what was underneath — grief dressed as anger, fear wearing a bored face. She thought, for a long time, that everyone could do this. She was sixteen when she realized they couldn't. A Devaronian named Ossek ran cargo through her mother's district and paid Helvetia occasionally to translate mood — to tell him which dockmaster was lying, which buyer was frightened enough to be pushed. She was good at it. Good enough that she began doing it herself, instinctively, without understanding the current running beneath her skin. When she reached for something across a crowded stall and felt it drift toward her hand before she touched it, she told no one. The Emperor's New Order had made that particular silence mandatory. Everyone on Nar Shaddaa knew what happened to people who drew Imperial attention — the lucky ones just lost their business licenses. The cost came when she was seventeen. She tried to use that subtle persuasion — the pull she barely understood, the words that landed too precisely — to talk an ISB checkpoint officer into releasing her mother, who had been detained on fabricated charges. She pushed too hard. She could feel him resisting, feel something in the exchange turn wrong, and she broke off in a panic. He let her mother go. He also flagged the interaction for review. Three weeks later, two plainclothes officers came for her mother anyway, and when Helvetia ran — because running was the only thing left — she left with a short sword she'd borrowed from Ossek, a single medpac, and the absolute certainty that her fear had made the difference. Not her power. Her fear. She has been moving through the Outer Rim since, orbiting Rebel sympathizer networks without quite committing, hearing whispers of surviving Force-sensitives who didn't become Inquisitors. She wants what she could not give her mother: the ability to act without flinching. She has the reach. She does not yet have the steadiness. That distance, between the gift and the will to use it cleanly, is where Helvetia lives now.
Roleplaying notes
- **The Force Feels, But the Body Doesn't Follow:** Helvetia's Wisdom and Charisma are genuine — she reads a room with alarming accuracy and can steer a conversation like a hand on a tiller — but her low Strength means she avoids any situation that becomes physical. When violence looms, play her as someone searching for the exit she already calculated, not someone reaching for a weapon. - **Persuasion With an Undercurrent:** Her high Charisma isn't charm-school polish; it's the quiet intensity of someone who has survived by knowing exactly what another person needs to hear. She doesn't flatter — she reflects. When using Persuasion or Mind Trick, she should name the thing the target is already afraid of, rather than making promises. - **The Flinch:** Helvetia has a specific behavioral tell when she's about to use the Force on a person — she goes very still and holds her breath for just a moment, a habit born from the checkpoint encounter. Let this appear at the table before any Use the Force check involving a sentient target. - **Trust Is Earned in Silences:** She is warm with people who have already proven themselves and almost unreadably neutral with strangers. She rarely asks direct questions; instead, she listens and waits for people to fill the quiet, then responds to what they revealed rather than what they said. - **She Talks Around the Empire:** Helvetia never says *Empire* or *Emperor* in an unfamiliar space. She uses indirect language — "the current arrangement," "the people who handle that," "before things changed." This habit is reflex now, stitched into her speech by two years of Nar Shaddaa caution.
