Backstory
The emblem was the first thing he remembered. Not his mother's face, not the ship, not whatever world they had been running from — just the cold press of metal against his sternum as someone tucked it inside his wrappings and let him go. The Jedi found him on Coruscant's lower levels, somewhere in the gray sprawl between Level 1313 and the transit corridors that fed the Senate District's underbelly. Master Orin Selu, a Zabrak healer on a routine outreach mission for the Temple, was the one who carried him up. Damien was three years old and Force-sensitive enough that the ambient readings spiked when the Knights lifted him. The Council approved the intake without ceremony. The Order did not ask questions about abandoned children. It simply absorbed them. That silence became the architecture of Damien's life. He grew up inside the Temple's clean corridors and understood, earlier than most, that the Jedi were not rescuers. They were collectors. He watched initiates arrive — some crying, some blank with shock — and watched the Masters explain, with practiced calm, that attachment was a path toward suffering. He learned the lesson. He simply refused to believe it was true. He was good, genuinely good, at the things the Order valued least. His perception in group meditation exercises unnerved other younglings; he felt the emotional weather in a room before anyone spoke. His insight made him useful and uncomfortable in equal measure. In the sparring halls he moved well, spare and efficient, learning early that leverage mattered more than force when you were not the strongest body in the room. The Temple's formal lessons gave him more trouble. He processed written instruction slowly, and more than one instructor noted, with diplomatic frustration, that young Damien Skye learned by watching and doing, not by studying. He stopped volunteering answers in the classroom. He started watching the instructors instead. What he could not stop doing was asking about the emblem. He described it to archivists. He sketched it badly — his hands could fight but could not draw — and passed the sketch to a senior initiate who had access to the lower stacks. No one recognized it. The Temple's records of his intake listed only a sector and a date. He memorized both and told himself he would use them eventually. The assignment of a Master should have been the thing that settled him. Instead, it cracked something open. The day Master Selu formally accepted him as a Padawan, Damien stood in the ceremony and felt, beneath the ritual and the approval, that he had just been claimed again. That someone had once more decided his future without his consent. The gratitude he was supposed to feel arrived wrong — curdled, suspicious. He carries the training saber they gave him and the medpac they issued him and the syntherope he found and kept because it felt more honest than anything the Order handed over. And beneath his robes, against his sternum, he still carries the emblem. The Clone Wars have begun. The galaxy is fracturing at its seams. Somewhere in the chaos, Damien Skye believes, is a thread that leads back to a ship, a world, and a person who pressed cold metal to his chest and made a decision he has never been allowed to understand. He intends to find out why.
Roleplaying notes
- **Perception as Paranoia:** Damien's high Wisdom and proficiency in Perception mean he notices things — exits, hands, silences — before others do; play this as a constant low-level vigilance, not alertness, scanning a room the moment he enters it because the Order taught him to be aware and experience taught him not to trust what he saw. - **Charisma as Tension:** With a CHA of 8, Damien's Mind Trick is a Force crutch, not a social skill — he reaches for it in conversations that make him uncomfortable, not because manipulation comes naturally, but because honest persuasion does not; he is blunt where he should be diplomatic and goes quiet where he should explain himself. - **The Emblem Ritual:** Once per session, when Damien is uncertain or afraid, he should touch the emblem beneath his robes — a small, private gesture that he is unaware he performs, a tell that perceptive allies might notice long before he admits anything is wrong. - **Transactional Trust:** Damien extends provisional trust to people who demonstrate competence and honest motive, not rank or affiliation — a clone sergeant who speaks plainly will earn more from him than a Jedi Knight who invokes the Code; he pushes back on authority instinctively and only respects it after he has tested it. - **Clipped and Watchful Speech:** Damien speaks in short, direct sentences and rarely volunteers personal information — he asks questions more than he answers them, and when pressed on something emotional, he deflects with a practical observation, the verbal equivalent of changing the subject before anyone notices the door was open.
