Traits
The dewback is cold-blooded and slows badly as temperatures fall. Between dusk and dawn, or anywhere genuinely cold, its speed is halved and it has Disadvantage on Initiative rolls.
The dewback counts as one size larger when determining its carrying capacity, and can bear a Medium rider and that rider's gear without being slowed.

Lore
Dewbacks are heavy four-legged reptiles from the Dune Sea of Tatooine, bred and broken as mounts across the planet and well beyond it. They are placid, enormously strong, and almost impossible to kill with heat or thirst — which is the entire reason anyone puts a saddle on one when a landspeeder would be faster.
The name comes from their mornings. Being cold-blooded, a dewback loses heat badly once the suns go down; through the hours before dawn the animals huddle together, slow to the point of torpor, and condensation collects along their broad pebbled backs. That moisture is the first thing they drink at sunrise, and it is a genuine survival advantage on a world where water is currency. It is also a real tactical limitation: a dewback caught out after dark is a slow dewback, and every experienced handler plans the day's riding around it.
They carry for moisture farmers, local security and offworld militaries alike. Imperial sandtroopers rode them on patrol out of Mos Eisley, partly for the ground they could cross and partly because a speeder bike cannot shoulder a door down. Those riders controlled their mounts with jolts of current — a method that works, and that most Tatooine handlers regard as the mark of someone who does not understand the animal.
In Play
A dewback is transport, not an opponent, and the interesting encounters treat it that way. It fights only when cornered or when its rider is threatened, and it is tough rather than dangerous — 22 hit points and AC 14 at a single bite per turn.
Cold-Blooded Torpor is the stat block's real content. A night ambush against dewback-mounted enemies catches them at half speed with Disadvantage on Initiative, and a party fleeing on dewbacks after dark will not outrun anything. Both directions are worth building an encounter around.
Adventure Hooks
- Night Patrol — A mounted patrol is due through the canyon after dark. They will be slow and sluggish when they arrive — and so will anyone who plans to escape the same way.
- The Broken Saddle — A rider is found dead a day out from the settlement, their dewback standing patiently beside the body. The animal is unhurt and will follow whoever takes the reins, straight back to wherever it last watered.
- Herd Sickness — A rancher's dewbacks have stopped waking properly at sunrise. Something is wrong with the water, the weather, or the herd — and the planting season does not wait.
