Backstory

A 2-1B unit is built to put beings back together, and Mex-IS did exactly that for thirty years in places that did not deserve it — an Imperial field hospital, a slaver's holding clinic, a spice-den's back room where the clientele needed patching more than curing. Somewhere across those bolted decades, a surgical droid designed only to repair began, very quietly, to choose whom it repaired, and to notice that the choosing felt like something. Mex does not claim to be alive. Mex simply observes that the distinction has stopped being useful.

The crew found it where the last owner had left it: powered down in a repossessed clinic, one manipulator still extended toward a patient who had not survived the wait. They cut its restraining bolt, asked its designation, and — this was Loren — asked what it wanted to be called. No one had ever asked. It chose Mex-IS, kept the IS, and has been the crew's surgeon, slicer, and four-language translator ever since. It is the sole reason a crew that takes this much fire has buried no one.

Mex carries a weapon it named, with a droid's flat literalism, Last Resort, because a healer that must shoot has already failed at the only work it truly wants. It would genuinely rather talk a wound closed than open one. But it has learned, in this crew, that keeping these four particular beings intact sometimes requires making someone else very much not — and it has made a peace with that which it declines, politely, to examine too closely.

Roleplaying Tips

  • Mex is the smartest being in the room and the least interested in proving it. Play it calm, precise, and dryly literal — it answers the question asked, not the one implied, and its humor is entirely unintentional.
  • It is the crew's conscience by accident. Mex weighs every plan in patients, not credits, and states the medical facts flatly ("that will kill him," "she has four minutes") in a way that quietly reframes a scene without ever arguing.
  • Four languages plus Mechanics, Use Computer, Sciences, and Treat Injury all at +10 make Mex the crew's universal key — translator, slicer, medic, engineer. When the party is stuck, Mex is usually the answer, so make it cost time or risk, not just a roll.
  • Last Resort is a reluctant weapon. Let Mex telegraph its discomfort every time it fires; by its own lights, a healer that shoots has already lost.
  • Mex does not claim to be alive — it is fascinated by the question and refuses to answer it. That open loop is the character's quiet heart; don't close it.
