Backstory

The Nagai raise their children on discipline and edged steel, and Rai D'shai was better at both, younger, than anyone on the cold world she left — which is precisely why she left it. There is no room, in a culture that prizes the perfect soldier, for a soldier who means to choose her own wars. She took her rifle and her silence off-world and sold both to whoever paid, and for two years she was very good and entirely alone.

Then a job went wrong — a client's trap, a room with no exits, and a fast-talking human she'd been hired alongside who should have died in it and instead talked the two of them out through a door that was not supposed to be there. Rai had spent her whole life among people who valued her for what she could kill. Loren Kray valued her for surviving, said so out loud, and then made a joke about it, and she has followed him ever since. She tells herself it is because his crew is the first place she has fought for something instead of someone's credits. That is true. It is not the whole truth.

She named her rifle Beloved — a Nagai custom, to name the weapon you would trust your life to — and she has never once corrected the crew's quiet assumption about who she means by it now. Rai does not talk about it. She keeps Loren alive, keeps two paces off his shoulder, keeps the feeling folded away where her discipline can sit on it, and does the one thing her upbringing truly gave her: she endures. If Loren ever notices, she will deny it to the black and mean the denial. Until then she is simply the best gun he has, and the most loyal, and no one on the crew is unkind enough to say aloud why.

Roleplaying Tips

  • Rai speaks rarely and hits precisely. In and out of a fight she is economy itself — a few words, a clean shot, then silence. Let the others fill the air; she watches the exits.
  • Her love for Loren is unrequited and unspoken, and she works hard to keep it reading as pure loyalty. Play it only in the small things — where she stands, whose safety she checks first, the half-beat before she follows an order she hates. Loren is oblivious; Rai intends to keep it that way. Never make it a punchline.
  • She endures. High Constitution, Endurance-trained, and a discipline that lets her take a hit that would break someone else and keep her feet. When the plan comes apart, Rai is the one still standing.
  • The rifle is named Beloved, and she means it more than one way. A GM can let that quiet ache surface exactly once, at the worst possible moment, and never again.
  • Nagai reserve is not coldness. She feels everything and was raised to show none of it — the gap between the two is the entire character.
