Cathar

Cathar are a feline species from the forested world of the same name, renowned across the galaxy for their retractable claws, their swift and ferocious fighting, and a warrior culture built on honor, family, and fierce loyalty. Where other peoples learned first to negotiate, the Cathar learned first to hunt — and few who have faced one at a full, four-limbed charge forget the sight.

A Cathar is unmistakably catlike. Short fur covers the body, ranging from tawny gold through grey to near-white, over a lean, athletic frame; the face is feline, with slitted eyes, a broad flat nose, and tufted, mobile ears that turn toward sound. Males grow a heavy mane and a pair of elongated fangs that jut from the lower jaw, while females carry a lighter mane and smaller canines that grow from the upper — and are often the quicker of the two. Both sexes share the species' defining weapon: claws that retract into the fingertips and slide free at will, able to open flesh or catch a sheer trunk with equal ease. Their eyes drink in what little light a night affords, and their reflexes are fast enough that an empty-handed Cathar has never really put its weapons away.

Their homeworld, also called Cathar, lies in the Quelii sector of the Outer Rim, in grid square N-6. It is a green world of immense forests, and rather than clear the trees the Cathar built into them — vast, living tree-cities lashed and carved among the branches, hung with the intricate knotwork that runs through all Cathar craft. The canopy was no paradise. The Cathar shared it with the Kiltik, colonies of huge and aggressive insects whose nests would become the proving ground of Cathar adulthood.

Cathar society holds honor, family, and the bond between mates above nearly everything, and it is deeply communal; a Cathar wronged will nurse a grudge as deep as its loyalty runs long. That intensity is given a name and a rite in the Blood Hunt, in which a warrior faces a Kiltik nest alone — both to win honor and to burn away the inner darkness the Cathar believe each of them carries. They speak Catharese, a tongue that studs its words with growls, and most also learn Basic, the better to move through a galaxy that has not always been gentle with them.

That gentleness has been in short supply. Generations before the Clone Wars, the Mandalorians under Cassus Fett fell upon Cathar and all but annihilated the species in an atrocity remembered simply as the Cathar Massacre — a wound that scattered the survivors across the galaxy and shadowed Cathar history for centuries afterward. (In Legends, the Massacre is a defining crime of the Mandalorian Wars, one that helped draw the Jedi Revan and Malak into the fighting.) Yet the Cathar endured, and several left deep marks on galactic history: Sylvar and her mate Crado, Jedi who trained beside the future Dark Lord Exar Kun under Master Vodo-Siosk Baas and were swept up in the Great Sith War; and later Juhani, a refugee raised on Taris who rose to Jedi Knight, fell briefly to the dark side, and was redeemed — widely recognized as the first openly gay hero in Star Wars.

As a player character, a Cathar is a natural front-line hunter. The species' agility and strength — a Dexterity lean with real muscle behind it — suit a fast, aggressive melee fighter who closes the gap and opens with a pounce; the retractable claws keep you dangerous even disarmed, and a predator's eyes let you fight where others are blind. The catch is temperament: the same fury that powers the Blood Hunt makes a Cathar impulsive under provocation, and the most memorable Cathar are played into that tension, not around it. Scoundrels, soldiers, and Force-users all wear the fur well — the constant is a character who feels most alive on the trail of something.

Cathar are lithe, powerfully built felinoids standing on average between 1.5 and 1.9 meters, covered head to foot in short fur that runs from pale cream and tawny gold to russet, grey, and near-white, frequently broken by darker stripes or spots across the face and limbs. The head is distinctly feline: a short muzzle with a broad, flat nose, slitted pupils in eyes of green, gold, or amber, whiskers, and large tufted ears that pivot toward sound. A mane frames the face and neck — thick and prominent on males, lighter on females — and sexual dimorphism carries into the teeth: a male's elongated canines rise from the lower jaw, giving him a permanent underbite of fangs, while a female's smaller canines grow from the upper. Every Cathar bears the species' signature: retractable claws housed in the fingertips that extend at will into curved, cutting points, useful equally for a killing strike, a climb, or the fine grip of a fighter who has never needed to draw a blade. Beneath the fur they are lean and fast-twitch, closer to a sprinting predator than a laborer, and they age at roughly a Human rate, reaching adulthood in their late teens.

To know one Cathar is to know the whole species' temperament in miniature: passionate, proud, and quick to feel. Cathar love fiercely and hate fiercely, and they make little effort to hide either — loyalty to family, mate, and clan is the axis their lives turn on, and a debt of honor or vengeance is carried until it is paid. They are direct where other species are diplomatic, and they respect strength, courage, and plain dealing far more than cleverness or rank. That candor makes them steadfast friends and dangerous enemies, but it also makes them impulsive: a taunt that another species would shrug off can pull a Cathar into a fight, and the blood-madness of the hunt is never far beneath the surface. Their own culture treats that darkness not as shame but as something to be met head-on and mastered, which is the whole point of the Blood Hunt. For an adventuring party, a Cathar is the one who charges when others hesitate and holds the line when others break — a front-line hunter whose ferocity is a weapon and whose temper is the price of admission. Played well, they are less a berserker than a person constantly choosing whether to loose the predator or leash it, and the most compelling Cathar heroes are the ones who have learned, like Juhani, that the choice is theirs to make.
