Lore
Ongree are an amphibious species from Skustell, known for twin eyestalks, an upside-down facial arrangement, and a diplomatic habit of seeing all sides.
Work down an Ongree's head and nothing sits where other species expect it. The cranium is tall and tapers upward, and from either side of it a flexible eyestalk emerges, carrying each eye out and away from the skull so that one object can be held in view from two separated angles at the same time. The mouth comes next, lipless and set in the centre of the forehead, and below it sits a row of four nostrils. To a Human, a Rodian or a Twi'lek the whole arrangement reads as a head mounted upside-down, which is close to the exact phrasing that follows the species through most galactic reference material. It is an unfamiliar face rather than an unfriendly one, and it stops registering as odd once a conversation starts. Below the neck the body is ordinary enough: two arms, two legs, no hair anywhere, and orange-yellow skin. The hands carry three digits each, one of them an opposable thumb, which Legends sources phrase more bluntly as two thick fingers and a thumb. Legends also gives the Ongree a pronounced hump across the back and makes a point of noting that the ungainly silhouette conceals real agility. Sizes vary with the source: Jedi Master Coleman Kcaj was recorded at a full 2.04 meters, while the Saga Edition writeup puts a typical Ongree nearer 1.9 meters and about 80 kilograms. Either way this is a tall, light-framed, long-limbed people, catalogued in the reference works as amphibian and piscine as well as humanoid.
Skustell is a humid world in the Skustell Cluster, a knot of stars in the Tarabba sector of the Outer Rim Territories, sitting in grid square N-19 of the Standard Galactic Grid. The cluster began as a Legends location and was folded back into current canon through the 'Star Systems of the Galaxy' appendix that accompanied the Star Wars Galaxy Map on StarWars.com (published 2025-06-24), which is why older and newer sources agree on the name while differing in how much they say about the place. Saga Edition widens the picture: it describes the Ongree as coming not from one planet but from a cluster of habitable worlds in the Skustell region, most of them swampy or oceanic. (Assumption: the canon line naming Skustell as the homeworld and the Legends-era description of several wet Ongree worlds are compatible, with Skustell as the point of origin and its neighbours as long-settled extensions of it, though no source states this outright.) That reading fits how individuals get catalogued. Pablo-Jill, the best-known Ongree Jedi Knight, is described as native to the Skustell Cluster rather than to the planet itself. Legends adds the detail that matters most for how the species is perceived: even after Skustell was absorbed into wider galactic society, Ongree were not commonly seen far from home. They are a known species, not a common one, which is why a single Ongree in a cantina or a Senate corridor draws a second look.
The cultural record is thin, and it is better to say so than to invent around it. No published source describes Ongree family structure, government, faith, cuisine, architecture or funeral custom. What the sources do establish is a reputation. Ongree were widely read as a measured, diplomatic people, and that reputation was built directly on the geometry of their eyes: because an Ongree can study the same thing from two angles at once, other species concluded the species thinks the same way, weighing a problem from every available side before committing. Saga Edition states it as a value outright, saying Ongree culture emphasises looking at things from all sides and prepares them unusually well for a diplomat's life. Many became negotiators, envoys and politicians, and the species speaks Ongrean alongside Basic. The same talent travelled downhill just as easily. Legends notes that Ongree negotiating skill was also put to less wholesome use, with some of them keeping company with crime lords and gangsters, and Acros-Krik, the corrupt Ongree mayor of Coruscant's Uscru Entertainment District who fed intelligence to Black Sun, is the species' standing example. The one scrap of actual Ongree-attached folk culture on record is a nursery rhyme. Ruusstha Vidyarvrikt, an elderly Ongree nursemaid from Dalna who served the Jedi Order, sang 'shrii ka rai ka rai' to younglings who would not sleep, a song about creatures called Shrikarai that Emerick Caphtor and Stellan Gios still remembered as adults. (Assumption: whether that rhyme is Ongree in origin or Temple lore she simply carried is nowhere stated.)
For a species rarely seen offworld, the Ongree turn up at a remarkable number of hinge points in Jedi history. During the High Republic, Jedi Master Kunpar Vasivola, an Ongree with chin tentacles, was stationed at the Valo Temple, where he grudgingly let his Padawan Ram Jomaram skip Republic Fair preparations to repair a broken security speeder bike in his garage; when the Nihil overran Valo he survived by passing himself off as the temple's caretaker, and he later knighted Jomaram himself. The species was not uniformly on the Jedi side. An unnamed Ongree fighting for the Path of the Open Hand faced Enya Keen with a lightsaber, taunted her, drew her attention as a decoy for other Path warriors, and missed the killing blow. Generations later, Pablo-Jill served as a Jedi Knight and Republic General. He dropped into the Petranaki arena at the First Battle of Geonosis in 22 BBY, held the droid lines beside the Mirialan Padawan Barriss Offee, was separated from the other Jedi and left behind when Yoda's gunships lifted off, and still walked out alive to join the ground battle. After his knighting he had been posted to Ord Mantell with orders to impose some order on a lawless Mid Rim world. His end differs by continuity: in Legends, Grievous ran him through aboard the Invisible Hand and kept his lightsaber as one of the prizes of his collection, beside those of Eeth Koth, Roron Corobb and Shaak Ti; in current canon he was hunted down and executed by the Inquisitorius sometime between 19 BBY and 9 BBY, and Obi-Wan Kenobi found his petrified body among the Jedi dead stored in Fortress Inquisitorius on the ocean moon of Nur. Coleman Kcaj climbed higher than any other Ongree on record. Born on Skustell, he took a seat on the Jedi High Council after Adi Gallia was killed on Florrum, sat in judgement when Ahsoka Tano was accused over the Temple bombing, attended by hologram when Shaak Ti reported the clone trooper Tup's malfunction and the death of Master Tiplar, and was in the chamber when Plo Koon produced Sifo-Dyas's lightsaber and the clone army was traced back to Dooku. He was among the few to slip Order 66; the Inquisitorius eventually listed him as a confirmed survivor after five years of hiding well enough to be presumed dead. (In Legends he is likewise one of the handful of Council members to live through the opening phase of the purge, with Yoda, Oppo Rancisis and Obi-Wan Kenobi.) A production footnote is worth knowing: the Revenge of the Sith Ongree started life as a senator named Sweitt Concorkill, meant to stand with the lawmakers growing uneasy about Palpatine, and was cut before photography wrapped. The model was reused to fill one of the Council chairs reserved for digital characters and became Kcaj, while the discarded name was later handed to a Vurk senator instead. Later still, as the Empire collapsed, an Ongree boy from Coruscant named Urk G'lar was one of six children of the Anklebiter Brigade who broke into Mas Amedda's quarters in the Imperial Palace in 5 ABY.
An Ongree player character arrives at the table as an outsider from a wet, little-visited corner of the Outer Rim, with a face most of the galaxy has heard described and few have actually sat across from. The obvious build is the one the sources push hardest: the negotiator, the envoy, the one still asking the second question while everyone else is already shouting, trading on a species-wide reputation for impartiality that gets handed over whether it has been earned or not. The less obvious build is just as well supported, because Legends supplies it directly: the fixer, the ward boss, the broker who worked out that a reputation for seeing all sides is the best cover a crooked operator can wear. Jedi lineage is wide open too, from a High Republic temple master to a Clone Wars general to a survivor hiding in plain sight through the Purge, since Ongree have been all three. Because the written culture is so sparse, there is unusual room to decide what a specific Ongree carries from home: a swamp-coast upbringing, a reef settlement, or a childhood on Coruscant like Urk G'lar's with no memory of Skustell at all. The thing worth playing deliberately is the eyes. An Ongree sees the room from two places at once, and the habit that grows out of that, refusing to settle on a single reading of a situation until the other angles have been checked, is the species' real signature, far more than the skin or the silhouette.
Physical Description
An Ongree stands tall and narrow, typically around 1.9 meters and roughly 80 kilograms, though Jedi Master Coleman Kcaj was recorded at a full 2.04 meters. The skull is tall and tapers upward, and the arrangement of the face is what every description of the species leads with: two flexible eyestalks extend from either side of the head, the lipless mouth sits in the centre of the forehead, and four nostrils are set in a row beneath it. Because the mouth rides high and the eyes sit wide, other species consistently describe an Ongree head as looking like it has been fitted upside-down. The effect reads as unusual, nothing more, and it stops registering once a conversation starts. The eyestalks are genuinely mobile, giving a field of view far wider than a forward-eyed species enjoys and letting an Ongree hold a single object in sight from two separated angles at the same moment. Skin is hairless and orange-yellow; Kcaj is recorded with yellow skin and yellow eyes. The build is bipedal and otherwise familiar, two arms and two legs, and each hand carries three digits including an opposable thumb, which Legends phrases as two thick fingers and a thumb, suiting a people whose grip is strong rather than fine. Legends also describes a humpbacked back and a gait that looks awkward, and makes the point that the awkwardness misleads: Ongree are naturally agile despite the silhouette. Reference works class them as amphibian and piscine as well as humanoid, in keeping with the humid, swampy and oceanic worlds they come from, and Pablo-Jill and Kunpar Vasivola show the species varies in detail, the latter noted with chin tentacles that not every Ongree carries.
Culture & Personality
The galaxy's read on the Ongree is consistent: measured, deliberate, hard to rush. That reputation rests on their eyes rather than on any study of Ongree psychology, and the sources are candid about the reasoning. Because an Ongree can observe one thing from two angles at once, other species concluded the species must think in the same layered way, examining a situation from every available perspective before committing to one. Saga Edition hardens the idea into culture, saying Ongree raise their young to look at things from all sides and that the upbringing suits them to a diplomat's career. In practice the species produced exactly the professions you would predict: negotiators, mediators, envoys, senators, and in Kcaj's case a Council member whose recorded strengths were meditation, strategy and diplomacy, the last of which Wookieepedia attaches to the Ongree as a whole with the word negotiable. The same disposition cuts the other way without strain. Legends records Ongree who put their patience and their talent for reading a room at the service of crime lords and gangsters, and Acros-Krik ran a Coruscant entertainment district as a Black Sun informant. Seeing all sides is not the same as taking the right one. Individuals vary far more than the stereotype allows. Kunpar Vasivola was cautious enough to survive an occupation by pretending to be a caretaker and warm enough to knight the Padawan he had grumbled at. Ruusstha Vidyarvrikt spent her later years singing frightened younglings to sleep. Pablo-Jill was aggressive enough to jump straight into the Geonosis arena and stubborn enough to live through being abandoned there. Urk G'lar, barely more than a child, talked a Grand Vizier into surrendering an empire instead of killing him in his bed. The thread they share is a reluctance to accept the first reading of anything, and a corresponding patience with the second and third. What many Ongree reportedly tire of is being treated as a walking illustration of perspective by people who never got around to asking what this particular Ongree actually thinks. (Assumption: the sources describe the species' outward reputation in detail and say almost nothing about its inner life, so anything past that reputation is interpretation.)
Famous Ongree Characters
Coleman KcajJedi Master and member of the Jedi High Council
Born on Skustell, Kcaj is the highest-placed Ongree on record: he took a seat on the Jedi High Council after Adi Gallia was killed on Florrum and served through the back half of the Clone Wars. He sat in judgement on the accusations against Ahsoka Tano, attended by hologram when Shaak Ti reported the clone trooper Tup's malfunction and Master Tiplar's death, and was present when Plo Koon produced Sifo-Dyas's lightsaber and the clone army was traced to Dooku. Noted for meditation, lightsaber combat, military strategy and diplomacy, he was one of the few Jedi to escape Order 66 and was later named on an Inquisitorius list of confirmed survivors after five years in hiding. He first appeared in Revenge of the Sith, built from a digital model originally created for a cut Ongree senator.
Pablo-JillJedi Knight and Republic General during the Clone Wars
A native of the Skustell Cluster, Pablo-Jill is the Ongree most viewers have actually watched fight: he dropped into the Petranaki arena at the First Battle of Geonosis in 22 BBY, held off droids alongside the Mirialan Padawan Barriss Offee, was separated from the other Jedi and left behind when Yoda's gunships lifted, and survived to rejoin the ground battle. After his knighting he had been posted to Ord Mantell to bring order to a lawless world. In Legends he was killed by General Grievous aboard the Invisible Hand, his lightsaber kept as a trophy beside those of Eeth Koth, Roron Corobb and Shaak Ti; in current canon he was executed by the Inquisitorius and his petrified body was found by Obi-Wan Kenobi inside Fortress Inquisitorius on the moon of Nur.
Kunpar VasivolaJedi Master of the High Republic, stationed at the Valo Temple
An Ongree Jedi Master with chin tentacles who ran the Jedi presence at the Valo Temple and took Ram Jomaram as his Padawan. He is remembered for two small and very characteristic decisions: letting Jomaram skip Republic Fair preparations to repair a broken security speeder bike in his garage, and surviving the Nihil occupation of Valo by passing himself off as the temple's caretaker rather than its Jedi Master. He later knighted Jomaram himself.
Ruusstha VidyarvriktElderly Ongree nursemaid in service to the Jedi Order
An Ongree from Dalna who looked after Jedi younglings and is the source of the only piece of Ongree-attached folk culture on record. She sang the nursery rhyme beginning 'shrii ka rai ka rai', a song about creatures called Shrikarai, to children who refused to sleep. Emerick Caphtor and Stellan Gios both still remembered it as adults, which is how it reached the record at all.
Urk G'larChild member of the Anklebiter Brigade
An Ongree boy born on Coruscant who joined the Anklebiter Brigade, a band of children who harried the Empire during the Galactic Civil War. In 5 ABY he was one of six brigade members who broke a laundry vacu-tube into Grand Vizier Mas Amedda's quarters inside the Imperial Palace and surrounded him while he slept. Amedda begged them to kill him, the children balked, and instead they cut a deal to get him out in exchange for the Empire's surrender. Amedda kept his word, signed the Galactic Concordance, and credited the children for his rescue.
Acros-KrikCorrupt mayor of Coruscant's Uscru Entertainment District
The standing example of the Ongree talent for negotiation pointed the wrong way. Acros-Krik governed the Uscru Entertainment District on Coruscant while quietly serving as an informant for the Black Sun crime syndicate, selling it intelligence on the district's residents and visitors. He is the figure Legends sources have in mind when they note that Ongree diplomatic skill was sometimes turned to less wholesome ends.
