About the Chitin Carapace
At its heaviest, chitin stops being clothing and becomes a shell. The carapace is built from the thickest plates a hive can grow — a queen's guard, a war-beast's back, the reinforced thorax of an elite — cured, resin-bonded, and layered until it turns a blaster bolt the way a bunker turns a slug. It is genuinely heavy armor, slow and enclosing — cured into a shell this thick, chitin keeps none of the living give it had on the creature, so a wearer trades away agility entirely for the kind of protection that lets them walk into a firing line and keep walking. What sets it apart from metal plate of the same class is the scale: a chitin carapace runs around twenty kilos where comparable heavy armor runs twenty-five to thirty-five, a real difference on a long approach or a breach that runs long. It keeps chitin's radiation resistance, too, which is why you find it on the ones who hold the reactor room, the foundry floor, or the irradiated no-man's-land nobody else will cross.
Notes
A thick, resin-bonded chitin shell — heavy protection that undercuts metal plate on weight (roughly 20 kg where comparable heavy armor runs 25–35). Rare. The wearer has advantage on saving throws against radiation and irradiated environments.
