Geonosians

7 stat blocks, ordered by threat rating.

The Geonosians are not an army in the ordinary sense — they are a hive. The winged, insectoid people of the ring-scarred desert world of Geonosis are bred by caste for a purpose, bound together by a low telepathic hive-mind, and they fight the way they build: as a single, coordinated organism. A hive assumes it will be attacked, and it answers with layered defenses — swarms of drones, wings of soldiers striking from above, elite shock-troops with weapons made to cut through armor and shields, and, at the center of it all, a queen who does not fight so much as command.

Their weapons are the reason a Geonosian fight plays differently from any blaster line: the Gordarl Weaponsmiths built a whole family of sonic arms whose concussive blasts slide past reflective armor and, crucially, cannot be deflected by a lightsaber. The galaxy learned this at the First Battle of Geonosis, where the arena's insectoid crowd became the war's first battlefield and the Jedi's most trusted defense simply stopped working. A campaign can meet the hive at its Separatist height — foundries roaring, aristocrats scheming — or in the bitter aftermath of the Empire's sterilization of the planet, where scattered survivors guard the last living hives with everything they have left.

What Counts as "Geonosians"?

The faction spans the hive's castes, from expendable labor to the matriarch at its heart:

  • Drones: the labor and service caste — wingless, expendable, dangerous only in a swarm.
  • Warriors: the winged soldier caste, striking from the air with sonic blasters and static pikes; the elite tier carries beam-tuned arms that pierce armor and shields.
  • Aristocrats: the scheming noble command tier — winged commanders who direct the swarm with orders and pheromones (the archetype behind archdukes like Poggle and lieutenants like Sun Fac).
  • Handlers: picadors who drive the arena's monsters into the fight and keep them pointed at the party.
  • The Risen: undead Geonosians — brain-worm-reanimated dead bound to a queen's will.
  • The Queen: the colossal, egg-laying hub of the hive-mind, who raises the dead and turns a skirmish into a siege.

How Geonosians Fight

A hive fights in three dimensions and never as individuals. Warriors and picadors take the air, striking from angles a ground line can't answer, while drones swarm the front and aristocrats hang back, sharpening the whole force with command bonuses and steadying it against fear. Their sonic weapons bite through armor, cover, and — for the elites — energy shields, and they cannot be turned aside by a lightsaber, so a party used to deflecting its way through blaster fire has to fight this one honestly. Against a queen it becomes a war of attrition the hive is built to win: every drone the party drops can be hatched or raised again, and only killing the matriarch collapses the whole thing at once.

Geonosian Encounter Themes (GM Gold)

  • The Undeflectable Swarm: the one faction a lightsaber party can't simply parry. Sonic arms punish the assumption that a Jedi is safe in the open.
  • Death From Above: winged warriors and picadors control the vertical battlefield — dive, strafe, and reposition faster than the party can pin them.
  • The Hive Doesn't Run Dry: a queen hatches drones and reanimates the dead every round. Drawn-out fights favor the hive; the answer is to reach and kill the matriarch.
  • The Arena: picadors and their beasts turn any fight into blood-sport. Cut the handler from the monster and the odds swing back.

Threat Rating (TR) in Geonosian Encounters

Geonosians punch above their individual TR through coordination: aristocrats buff the swarm, the hive-mind grants advantage, and the queen manufactures fresh bodies faster than the party can clear them. Use TR for the baseline, then remember that the hive is the threat — the commander and the queen are what make the rest lethal.

TR Bands (Geonosian Examples)

  • TR 0.25–1 — drones and undead Geonosians: cheap, expendable, endless in a hive.
  • TR 2 — winged warriors and arena picadors who carry the fight.
  • TR 4 — elite warriors and aristocrat commanders: the hard core and the brains.
  • TR 6+ — the hive queen: a set-piece boss and "this is now the main plot" threat.
